ジャズ/フュージョン界の大御所キーボード奏者Bob James（1939年生まれ）の久々の紹介です。
昨日のLou Reedが12年ぶりのエントリーでしたが、Bob Jamesの前回のエントリー『Two』（1975年）が2007年だったので13年ぶりとなります。
Quincy Jonesに見出され、 60年代に『Bold Conceptions』（1963年）、『Explosions』（1965年）というピアノ・トリオによるリーダー作を残しているBob Jamesですが、彼の才能が本格的に開花したのは1973年にCreed TaylorのCTIレコードと契約してからです。
その第一弾となるのは今回紹介する『One』（1974年）です。次作『Two』（1975年）と並んでBob Jamesを代表するフュージョン作品です。
プロデュースはCreed Taylor。
アレンジはBob James自身。
Bob James（key）以下、Richie Resnicoff（g）、Eric Weissberg（pedal steel g）、Gary King（b）、Steve Gadd（ds）、Idris Muhammad（ds）、Ralph MacDonald（per）、David Friedman（vibe）、Grover Washington Jr.（ss）、Hugh McCracken（harmonica）、Thad Jones（tp、flh）、Lew Soloff（tp）等のミュージシャンが参加しています。
本作のハイライトといえば、泣く子も黙る定番サンプリング・ソース「Nautilus」。『Two』収録の「Take Me to the Mardi Gras」と双璧をなす人気曲ですね。
Roberta Flackの大ヒットでお馴染みのEugene Mcdaniels作の名曲カヴァー「Feel Like Making Love」、パッヘルベル（Johann Pachelbel）「カノン（Canon in D Major ）」のカヴァー「In the Garden」、ムソルグスキー（Modest Mussorgsky）「はげ山の一夜」のカヴァー「Night on Bald Mountain」というクラシック名曲カヴァー2曲も印象的です。また、オープニングを飾る「Valley of the Shadows」は定番サンプリング・ソースとして大人気です。
普通にジャズ/フュージョン作品としても楽しめますが、Hip-Hop好きの人はサンプリング・ソースの宝庫としても楽しめる1枚です。
『Two』（1975年）とセットで手元に置いておきたいアルバムですね。

クラシック名曲カヴァーその2。モデスト・ムソルグスキー（Modest Mussorgsky）の「はげ山の一夜」をカヴァー。演奏の格好良さではコレが一番！ダイナミックでスリリングでグルーヴィーでスケールの大きさを感じる演奏が聴く者を圧倒します。個人的には本作のベスト・トラック。
